    What Practicing with AI Roleplay Taught Me

    About Challenging Conversations, Coaching… and About Myself

    When I first started using RolePlays.ai, I was curious and intrigued, but also slightly skeptical. How could AI actually help me practice difficult conversations? Wouldn't it just confirm what I already wanted to hear?

    As someone currently training to become a coach, I wasn't looking for a gimmick. I was looking for a way to genuinely improve. And in coaching, improvement usually means asking better questions, challenging perspectives, promoting reframing, inviting deeper reflection and helping coachees move beyond surface-level thinking.

    This is often harder than it sounds.


    The Safe Space I Didn't Know I Needed

    In real coaching sessions, there is pressure. You want to create a supportive environment where coachees can explore freely and develop their own insights. You want to challenge them but responsibly. Naturally, you don't want to make mistakes.

    Because real emotions are involved, I often found myself staying within techniques I already felt comfortable with. Not because I lacked curiosity or didn't want to grow, but because I felt responsible for providing proper professional support.

    Using the "Asking Open Questions" scenario on the platform changed that dynamic.

    I can chat or speak with an avatar coachee about their complex situation and experiment. I can challenge more directly, go deeper into topics and test new (reframing) methods. If something doesn't land as intended, I don't risk harming a real relationship or losing a client. Instead, I gain detailed feedback and a real learning opportunity.

    What surprised me most is how realistic the responses feel. The AI personas don't reply with surface-level answers. They push back, hesitate, open up gradually, express doubt, defensiveness, even relief. That tension, combined with the psychological safety of practicing, creates a powerful learning environment.

    Challenging, yet judgment-free.


    When an Avatar Conversation Felt Strangely Real

    Recently, I coached an anxious persona who was deeply afraid of losing his job. His fear of change was overwhelming and caused him to doubt himself.

    As we talked, I experimented with questions that focused less on the job itself and more on identity. Who are you outside of your role? Where else do you find meaning? Gradually, his perspective shifted. He recognized he had other sources of stability such as his hobbies, his children, his skills, that weren't tied to his career or the uncertainty within the company. He found a new sense of safety and calmness that came from within. When the session ended, I felt genuinely happy. Not because "the AI solved a problem," but because I saw how powerful the right questions can be.

    It reminded me why I want to coach in the first place. For me it's all about that moment when someone experiences a true breakthrough and realizes their own self-efficacy.

    And yes, I immediately reviewed my feedback and checked my scores afterward. I've even turned it into a personal challenge to improve them with every session. Always chasing those new high scores!


    Practicing as a Future Coach and as an Employee

    I don't only use the platform for coaching scenarios. I also practice performance reviews and feedback conversations from the manager's perspective. Leading those discussions has helped me understand what supervisors are expected to focus on: clarity, structure, concrete examples, measurable outcomes, and emotional awareness.

    That insight has significantly improved how I prepare for my own real-life conversations. It feels like finally seeing both sides of the table.


    What Impresses Me and What It Doesn't Replace

    The language, tone, and even accents across chat, voice, and video modes are surprisingly lifelike. Different personas bring different energies. Some analytical, bold, stubborn; others confused, positive or anxious. Difficulty levels vary too, making each interaction unpredictable enough to feel real.

    But let's be clear, this doesn't replace human interaction. There is no real body language and in real conversations you can't just mute yourself to think of what to answer next or quickly review notes. The emotional stakes are higher and managing your own reactions in the moment remains essential.

    What this platform offers is different! It offers preparation, repetition, focused skill development, and precise feedback with concrete examples of what you said and how it was perceived, all wherever and whenever you choose. That's something I didn't realize I was missing and has been essential for my growth.

    If you had told me a year ago that some of my most meaningful practice conversations would happen with an AI persona, I wouldn't have believed you. Now, I see it as a training ground, one that makes me more confident, more precise, and more intentional before stepping into real conversations.

    And for me, that makes all the difference.
